What To Wear for Family Pictures | Reno Family Photographer | Kristi Gayton Photography

So, you have booked your family session, picked out the perfect location, and the date is all set! Now comes the hard part (or so my clients tell me)... figuring out what to have everyone wear! With so many different personalities and styles in one family it can be overwhelming coming up with outfits that coordinate and keep everyone happy!

I often get calls and emails from my clients feeling a little stressed about coordinating their families outfits for pictures so I decided to share some tips for putting together the perfect outfits for your family and some ideas on where to shop for the perfect family picture outfits.

Here are some things to consider when choosing what to wear:

1. Weather:

If your session is schedule during the winter months you will want to make sure you choose something that is going to keep your family warm. If your kiddos are uncomfortable and cold during the shoot it's going to be difficult to get natural smiles from them. Sometimes parents are tempted to put their kids in short sleeved or thin shirts and just pop their jacket off for the photos. I would advise against this. Instead find options that are both warm and fashionable so everyone will be warm the entire time. It's easier for adults to handle the cold so one option is to have Mom wear a long sleeved shirt with a cute vest over the top for some extra warmth. For kiddos I suggest warm lined sweaters in neutral tones. For extra chilly days don't be afraid to add mix in coordinating hats/beanies. Open toed shoes are a definite no for cold weather sessions. Stick to cute boots (not clunky snow boots). For girls skirts and dresses are great when paired with warm tights.

These sisters are perfectly coordinated and cozy warm! We took these images in downtown Reno on a chilly day! They had the perfect shoes on for keeping their feet warm and walking around town and their cardigans were fashionable and cozy so that we had happy smiles through the session.

2. Location:

Consider where the photos are being taken. If you are going to be doing a lengthy session with a lot of walking involved you will need to take that into consideration and wear appropriate shoes. If you have a mini session scheduled (30 minutes or less) and there is no rocky terrain it is a great time to bust out the dressier shoes and take it up a notch!  If you are going to be at the beach it's completely logical that you would wear beach style clothing (brighter colors, shorts, sandals, etc).

3. Comfort and Practicality:

Try not to dress your kids in something they will be especially uncomfortable in. If you daughter has never worn tights, picture day isn't the best time to introduce them as she will be uncomfortable and pulling at them instead of joying the picture experience. The same goes for headbands, hats, sunglasses, etc. If it's not a regular part of the wardrobe go ahead and leave it out. One of my favorite places to shop for comfortable and stylish clothing for your babes is H & M kids!

4. Purpose of the Session:

What is it that you will be using the images for... are you putting new family photos up in your home? Are they going on Christmas cards? The purpose of the session can help you determine how much to dress up or if you should keep it more casual. If you are putting the images in your home you will want to consider the decor and style in your home. If you love vintage inspired pieces like me you may want to keep that in mind when choosing outfits so they match the aesthetic of your home. If you really want to dress the kids up and have your images stand out but don't want to purchase a brand new wardrobe consider renting. For girls there is a darling rental boutique called Rainey's Closet. You can see my client here rented from them for her family maternity session.

I love how these dresses rented from Rainey's Closet coordinate rather than all of them being in the exact same dress! It allows for each girl to show their own personality!

5. Matching: Stay away from putting everyone in the exact same outfit. A sea of blue jeans and white shirts doesn't allow anyone to stand out and starts to look like a mound of white with some heads sticking out- not a good look ;) Instead choose coordinating pieces that incorporate your style. Instead of dressing the same top to bottom consider just a couple of matching pieces such as Mommy and daughter in the same skirt. Ele Story sells the most adorable matching Mom daughter skirt sets among other Mommy and Me matches!

6. Shop from your Closet:

Shopping from your closet first is a great way to save money and utilize a piece you don't get to wear often. I also suggest choosing the pickiest person's outfit first and going from there. If you husband has 3 or 4 favorite go to shirts build the other outfits around that.

7. Accessorize:

Accessorizing allows you to coordinate without being too "matchy matchy!" A piece as simple as a scarf is a great way to pull in more of a particular color. I especially love when kids accessorize as it add more personality into the images. Just a fun hat or pair of boots can add a lot to an image!
